nora chipaumire, USA & Zimbabwe

Residency Dates:
September 5-27, 2026

“I’m a thinker. I’m a thinker who thinks through making.”

Born in 1965 in Mutare, Zimbabwe — then Rhodesia — nora chipaumire is a dancer and choreographer who lives between Berlin, New York, and Harare. She studied dance in Africa, Cuba, and Jamaica before settling in New York. She makes work and creates ideas that straddle multiple imaginaries — African, black, woman. A life lived through aesthetics informed by refusal, defiance, negotiation, contradictions and more. These refusals take the form of movement, objects, non objects, manifestos, sound and building a pedagogical practice (nhaka) that works the present now with the present past.

During her residency at Résidence Tallard, chipaumire will use Paris as a space for research, encounters, and exchange, in connection with her carte noire for the 2026 Festival d’Automne. Bringing together performance, exhibition, conversation, and pedagogy, the project extends her ongoing exploration of the relationships between history, embodiment, memory, and collective imagination.
